Often, when people think of downtown Charleston residences, they imagine large historic mansions on the battery. While this iconic South of Broad area is the most prestigious and popular of the many "boroughs" on Charleston's peninsula, there are several other sections of the city offering a wide variety of options for everyone.
South of Calhoun hosts a popular residential neighborhood, Harleston Village, located on the Southwest and central areas of the peninsula. Ansonborough and the French Quarter are luxuriously located on the East side near the port and harbor. Once you cross Calhoun going North, you experience one of our most exciting areas, Cannonborough and Eliotborough, in the heart of the peninsula. Well-known for their short walking distances to the college, university, hospitals, and King Street. Over on the East Side, you have easy access to the Ravenel Bridge to Mt. Pleasant. There's a great vibe here, with many homes being brought back to life daily. Some of my favorite Eastside hot spots include; Mercantile and Mash, Taco Boy, and Palmetto Brewing Company. (Click on the name of the restaurant for more information).
Then, jump over the crosstown to a whole new world in real estate and business, the upper peninsula. On the Upper East Side, there's always a hot new restaurant or apartment building popping up. Some of my favorites are; Rodney Scotts BBQ, The Royal American, and Edmund's Oast. Scoot a bit over to the center of the upper peninsula, and there you'll find a sweet, convenient honey hole called North Central. Complimented by wide, tree-lined streets complete with sidewalks, North Central is only minutes to the commercial action of the upper peninsula. North Central is thriving with homes built in the '30s and '50s with remarkable charm and character. If you are lucky, you may be able to snag a renovated home for under $900,000. If not, there's often one that needs restoring in the $600,000 range. Living near the yummy Park and Grove Cafe or The Harbinger Bakery makes it a worthy investment! Cross over Rutledge Avenue towards the Upper West Side and explore the highly desirable suburban area of Wagener Terrace. The neighborhood is made up of sidewalks, parks, and beautiful homes - some of which hug the Ashley River. Wagener Terrace is a quiet, diverse neighborhood only 2 miles from Downtown's city center. Renters, long-term residents, and short-term residents reside here. You can find a small cottage, a duplex, or a large estate in this gem of a neighborhood. Prices range from $600,000 to over $2 million dollars. There's something for everyone, including Charleston's famous Hampton Park! Over towards this park and The Citadel College , Hampton Park Terrace tends to beckon more primary residents who live in and love their historic homes. Closer towards the crosstown and the westside, these homes warrant a higher price point in the $1.6 million to $3 million range. Be sure to pop in my favorites Huriyali or Harold's Cabin for a snack. (Local tip: As a past resident of the area, my son really enjoyed visiting the Chick-fil-A on The Citadel campus after school.) All of these upper peninsula boroughs easily feed into King Street's shopping and restaurants. Many of the residents use street-legal golf carts for school drop-off, running errands, and going out to eat. There are several schools up here too. Be sure to check out the following: Charleston Charter School for Math and Science , Compass Collegiate Academy , James Simons Montessori School , and The Charleston Catholic School, to name a few. (Click the school names for more information).
Don't underestimate it. Everyone seems to be "movin' on up" to the upper end of the peninsula, and I am happy to help you explore more in person. Curry
